Hand-tinted Edwardian post card of Hastings Pier

In the early 20th century, many people still used a horse and cart. Street cleaners used wheelbarrows to clear horse droppings away and keep Hastings tidy.

The original pier was 910 feet long (277m) and was supported by 200 cast iron columns. At the entrance was a wide gap to allow the pounding waves of a storm to hit the sea wall and come harmlessly through the opening, thus preventing damage to the deck.
