Early View of Hastings Pier

Early view of Hastings Pier taken between 1884 and 1890. The tall poles were a trial for electric lighting.

When Hastings Pier opened in 1872 it rested on a structure of 200 iron columns. Now there are over 300, still combining strength, endurance and style. Six new columns support the Pier Visitors Centre, and each new column is able to take a weight of 100 tonnes, while the old columns could only support around 30 tonnes
