A fishing boat passing by the landing stage of the Pier

Hastings has one of the oldest fishing fleets in Britain and it maintains the largest number of beach launched fishing boats in Britain today.

Fishing boats often pass the Pier on their way out to sea; it should be possible to spot their registration numbers as all fishing boats in the UK have to be registered at a port. Hastings is not a port and our nearest port is at Rye, so the “R” stands for Rye, and the “X” for Sussex.
