Seaside towns in the 1930s were reaching new heights of popularity and local councils began investing heavily in new and exciting entertainments. Hastings saw a series of official ‘openings’ in 1931, including a greatly improved White Rock Baths, a completely rebuilt Hastings Railway Station, and the new seafront between White Rock and Marine Parade. The same year also saw the opening of the Bathing Pool in West St. Leonards, one of the largest in the UK, and St Leonards Pier was substantially rebuilt, reopening as the New Palace Pier.
