19th century drawing of Pier pile drivers

19th century drawing of Pier pile drivers
This illustration, showing the first pile for Hastings Pier being screwed into the seabed at 3am on the 18th December 1869, was by Frank Robinson and was reproduced in the Hastings Advertiser on 16 July 1917.

Eugenius Birch was the engineer who designed and built Hastings Pier. Altogether, he designed fourteen piers around the country. He decided to use iron columns to support the pier as they do not corrode easily in salt water, and therefore combine strength, endurance and style.
