Paddlesteamer docking at the end of the Pier, 1950

Both fishing and paddlesteamer trips remained popular after the Second World War, and remained so until Hastings and the Pier went into decline in the 1980s.

Beginning in 1884, paddlesteamers went from Hastings Pier along the coast to Eastbourne and Brighton, and over the Channel to Boulogne. The last steam ship to visit Hastings was the Waverley in 1986. Paddlesteamers were ideal for running seaside excursions from piers, because they could operate in shallow water and were highly manoeuvrable.
