Paddling on Hastings Beach

Edwardian ladies were much less shy than their Victorian predecessors when it came to showing a leg. This post card also shows the popularity of boating.

A big transformation came in 1899 when the council, after some years of agonising, finally allowed mixed bathing on Hastings beach. Now the way was open for the whole family to enjoy being by the sea, in and out of the water, together in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
