Painting of Hastings Pier by W H Borrow, 1887

An oil painting of Hastings Pier by W H Borrow, 1887.

The pavilion was the only building on the original pier and its elaborate design was based on fashionable Indian Mughal themes. It could hold up to 2,000 people for dances, concerts and theatricals. Designing a pavilion for Hastings Pier from the beginning proved very successful, but the pavilion accidentally burned down in 1917.
