"Seventeen Views of Hastings & Its Environs"

These engravings, intended for the tourist market, show Hastings before the Pier was built in 1872.

Hastings was already a popular seaside resort in the late 18th century, and King George III’s physician, Dr Baillie, recommended it to his patients. The Pigot & Co Directory for 1840 commented that Hastings had “the most excellent accommodations for sea bathing and that the recreations were in every respect worthy of this fashionable town”.
