Research document - The Re-opening of the Pier after WWII

In this view from Hastings Castle, St Leonards Pier can be seen beyond Hastings Pier. Both piers had their middle sections removed during WWII to prevent enemy landings, and St Leonards pier also suffered fire damage in WWII. It remained closed until it was finally demolished in 1951.

After the Second World War, Hastings Pier reopened in frugal times. Even so, the Hastings & St Leonard’s ‘What’s On’ guide for July 1947 lists Hector Davies & his broadcasting band giving concerts in the pavilion in the mornings and afternoons, and in the evening there was dancing to the band.
